The dark days of winter have come to Port Protection, Alaska but that hasn't stopped its residents from continuing their pursuit of a more sustainable life. Gary Muehlberger is getting an early start on marten trapping season, returning to familiar woods. Sam Carlson is already eyeing spring, getting a jump on his garden by building a new rain catchment system. With the phones down and needing some variety in her freezer, not to mention, fresh air; Mary Miller heads off into the woods on a solo ptarmigan hunt. And the Porters, with help of their neighbor, Timothy Curly Leech, set out to central Prince of Whales Island to purchase a new truck in order to bring back Port Protection's newest residents, a pair of pregnant goats. But with impassable roads, weathered equipment, fierce predators, and shorter days; winter still has plenty of tricks up its sleeve.
