As winter takes up residency in Port Protection, the community takes advantage of some mild weather to increase their chance of survival throughout the season. Sam Carlson and Stuart Andrews are on the hunt for additional protein, the Alaskan spot prawns. Before they can travel the treacherous waters to the shrimping grounds, they will have to engineer some new shrimp pots out of materials they have laying around. Meanwhile, trapping season is just opening up and that means Curly Leach is trying to snare some additional income. With traps cured, he heads out catch the illusive land otters, whose thick fur could help pay for a costly repair to his skiff. Amanda Makar also has skiff problems of her own. With the help of a neighbor, she attempts to repair her newly acquired skiff and make it seaworthy again. Just up the hill from Amanda, Hans and Timbi Porter have just been gifted fresh salmon, but in here in a village where electricity is a luxury, they are going to build a smoker to smoke their fish so they will have food supply that isn't dependent on an unpredictable utility in the long, dark winter.
