Hitler created the SS in 1925 as a private army that would be loyal to him to the death. The young German volunteers who joined the SS, dreamed of joining the Third Reich's racial elite. Submitted to intense propaganda and put in charge of the Reich's concentration camps, these fanatical activists would soon become criminals, jailing communists, Jews and all real and imagined enemies of National Socialism.
